Katherine (Shelley) Orr has authored and illustrated about twenty books for children with healing, nature, and cultural themes. Two of her books have won national recognition in the fields of science education and the language arts.* She has also contributed articles to professional scientific journals and popular magazines. Her illustrations have appeared in exhibits of original children’s book art in New York and Ohio. Her commissioned artworks include portraits, logos, posters, scientific drawings, a hotel mural, and a state highway sign.

As well as being an author and illustrator, Katherine has been a marine biologist, cruising sailor, scuba diver and environmental educator. She has lived and worked in New England, the Florida Keys, Hawaii, and islands of the Bahamas and Caribbean. About her books she says, “I combine my love of nature, art and narrative to create books for people of all ages that will educate, entertain, and hopefully inspire.”

Today Katherine lives on the island of Oahu with her husband, their dog, and an assortment of garden pets. Her favorite pastimes include reading, writing, enjoying nature, eating healthy plant-based foods, and practicing the ancient Chinese healing art of qigong.

*My Grandpa and the Sea was named a Notable Children’s Trade Book in the field of Language Arts by the National Council of Teachers of English; it also made the New York Public Library’s list of 100 Children’s Books for Reading and Sharing.

Story of a Dolphin was named an Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children by the National Science Teachers Association/Children’s Book Council, and named an Outstanding Elementary Science Book by the Society of School Librarians International.
